Letter P • 🔠Letter Series • Letter Hunt • Montessori Language

Today, we are exploring letter P. So, during our letter hunt, Adrian would walk around the house and collect all the objects that begin with the sound "p". DSC_0050

P is for popcorn, plate, plus (sing), pop/soda can, Pocahontas, princesses, pumpkin, puzzle, picture, pond, park, piano, pregnant, penny, pencil, pen, pig, parrot, pit, pin, puppy, pees, potato,  Pluto dog (Mickey's friend), pink, purple and a peg, puppet. And "p" is for a puffin, polar bear, panda, and a penguin.

"P" is also for pom-poms and pincer grip. So, we made this DIY letter P from bottle caps (simply glue caps with a glue gun to the piece of recycled card box). I then offered Adrian to fill each cap with different color pom poms using tongs while remembering the proper tracing direction.

Read our Letter Series post here, where you will also find an introduction to Montessori Language curriculum, as well as other letters we have been exploring.

"P" is for a pin, pin poking and pincer grip

DSC_0226"P" is for play dough

DSC_0226We used these botanical paints to color our play dough, and we also added turmeric spice to our yellow batch and cinnamon and chocolate to our brown batch.

DSC_0226 We are using these wooden dough tools

DSC_0231We used the brown dough to make a nest ~ see here Invitation To 🌾🌿 Create a Nest • 🐦Bird Unit Study.

3D 💠Flower Craft • 👱Father's Day 🎉Card • 🎨Watercolor🖌Painting • Arts ✂️Crafts 101 🎥 Series

Father's Day is approaching, and we are making a 3D Process Art craft which Adrian will give to Daddy as a Father's Day gift. We are using materials you probably have in your cupboard (salt, oats, and bran), along with some watercolors and sprinkles of imagination. DSC_0148

This is a fun fine motor activity that allows your child to express creativity while coming up with own coloring media combinations. You can use a variety of grain for this craft: from corn to rice ~ your imagination is the limit! And, there is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for a child than to be able to creatively express oneself openly and without judgment, and arts and crafts provide a wonderful opportunity for such expression.

What you will need:

  • watercolor pad (we are using this one)
  • watercolor paints (we are using this artist paint set and these watercolors in tubes)
  • oatmeal bran and salt
  • cotton balls
  • a glue gun,
  • and a stapler.

DSC_0092These kids watercolor techniques are exciting and interesting alternatives to basic watercolor painting. We love to experiment with the different medium, coming up with new creative expressions!

Adrian's favorite color currently is blue, so, of course, he chose a 💠blue flower! And, after researching types of nature's bountiful blue flowers, we set up a tentative artistic plan. However, I leave a lot of room for artistic expression, and with few additions and modifications, our Blue Flower has emerged!
DSC_0092This Flower art can be framed and hang in your child's room, or you can make a perfect birthday card out of it or this can be a very special Mother's Day or Father's Day gift. DSC_0150Happy Father's Day to All Dads! Whoever you are, wherever you are, know that you are special and that we love you!

American Indian 🎨Craft • North America Study • 🌎Geography 101 Kids Activities 📽Series 🎇

Today, we are continuing our North America study by making an America Indian craft while referencing to American Indian Crafts Kids Can Do! book.

DSC_0153What you will need:

  • brightly colored cardstock
  • dark crayons (we are using these oil pastels)
  • a toothpick
  • and a sprinkle of imagination.

DSC_0153First, color in the entire cardstock with a dark crayon.

DSC_0153Using a toothpick, offer a child to draw a story.

Imaginative storytelling while exploring creativity is an amazing way for children to express themselves.

DSC_0153Adrian's story is about a fishy and a blue macaw bird.

The opportunity to play freely encourages healthy development, and the opportunity to create freely benefits the child as a whole. Imaginative storytelling also helps with language training which is a vital part of the Montessori environment. Language Training activities elicit language from children and make them aware of the content, meaning, and context of the language they are hearing and using. There are many activities that can be used in Language Training, and imaginative stories are one of them. (You may download "Imagine Stories" Cards here.)

DSC_0153Do you use books to inspire you to make arts and crafts with your children?

Seeds to 🍉🌱🍅Plants Matching Activity • 🌱🌼Botany Unit Study

It is amazing how children are drawn to the wonders of nature, to its magic of bringing life from fuzzy buds and sleepy seeds. The cycle of a plant is particularly mesmerizing to a child: how from something so tiny can sprout a mighty tree with roots reaching down to the earth. "It is necessary for his psychical life to place the soul of the child in contact with creation, in order that he may lay up for himself treasure from the directly educating forces of living nature, said Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori Method. So, today, we are having a closer look at seeds ...

DSC_0006Can you guess which seed belongs to what type of a plant?

DSC_0006   A Seed is Sleepy book is a gorgeous book from award-winning artist and author, offering children a beautiful and informative look at the intricate, complex, and often surprising world of seeds.

DSC_0006Poetic in voice and elegant in design, the book introduces children to a fascinating array of seed and plant facts, making it perfect reading botany material at home.

DSC_0027 DSC_0027

Adrian also made a chart with types of plants written in columns, and he had to guess how would the seed look like by drawing it in a little square. He then, would open the seed bag and see if his prediction of how the seed should look was correct.

All matched up! Time for planting!
